ISSN 1328-1798 In AUGUST 1996 we have the following NEW materials for you:In the Articles section:This month we have received our first article for incubation on ultiBASE. This means that the author wants you to to review his work. As they are received your comments will be 'published' at the end of the article. After two months of incubation and formal peer review, the final version will be publised on ultiBASE. ultiBASE is keen to use the interactive possibilities of the World Wide Web to encourage broad discussion of the articles presented for incubation, thus improving their quality. Peter Ling from RMIT is the first intrepid author to submit his work for your evaluation. His article is entitled Evaluating teaching initiatives which employ resource based learning. Click on the title to read the article. Invitations to comment are provided with the article. Our second article for August is entitled 'The several purposes of life': Developing a curriculum for the Social Sciences and is contributed by Rob Watts. This moderated article is intended to provoke thought on curriculum design in the Social Sciences by highlighting the development of a new course at RMIT. In the Resources section: We have begun collecting descriptions of teaching materials available from Academic Development Units. This will continue to grow as we collect more contributions. Our list starts with twenty exciting titles covering a wide range of teaching and learning issues including assessment, post graduate supervision, teaching portfolios, mentoring and teaching for cultural diversity. You will also find updated current contents for the following journals:
Carmel McNaught, from the Academic Development Unit at LaTrobe University in Melbourne, has contributed a tip on 'Using technology in teaching - getting students in on the act.' This tip and her site of the month are available on our August Teaching tips page. Previous tips form a linked archive. See our latest feedback and add your own in the Guest book. After the plethora of conferences in July, our Events section has been updated with new events for you to attend. As usual we invite you to use the page to tell us (and the rest of the world) about your events. Exchange, our WWW discussion forum, is up and running. In response to your feedback we have improved our instructions for the use of Exchange. ultiBASE hopes the new explanations will facilitate discussion on teaching and learning issues within the academic community. Virtually all of our pages are updated on a monthly
basis, so most will include something new.
