ultiBASE In-Site, March 1997

ISSN 1328-1798

***********

In MARCH we present the following NEW materials:

In the Articles section, Dianne Hagan, joint winner of the inaugural ASCILITE award for the best World Wide Web project, describes the ideas she developed with Jason Lowder. Her article entitled Student feedback via the World Wide Web is a practical focus on one of the most popular aspects of their award wining work.

Leon van Schaik, Dean of the newly formed Faculty of the Constructed Environment at RMIT, places an emphasis on quality and excellence in his work. In an interview entitled Contructing a learning environment: An interview with Leon van Schaik, Dean van Schaik talks about education and some of the innovative teaching and learning initiatives in his diverse Faculty while revealing some of the earliest influences that guide his current thinking.

Many readers have despaired at the impossibility of keeping abreast with the abundance of sites appearing daily on the World Wide Web. In March we introduce a new and innovative section called Choice Clicks. Each month noted educators will give their personal selection of useful World Wide Web sites to provide specialised navigation through the web. Our first contributor is Dr. Robin Mason, Director of the Institute for Educational Technology at The Open University, U.K. Each of her choices is hotlinked so you can easily follow her trail.

In the Resources section we present two substantial reviews by Michael Jackson of the University of Sydney. First, the Australian 'classic' Learning to teach in higher education by Paul Ramsden is perceptively described and reviewed: the book's emphases on the learning process and on the differences between surface and deep learning are usefully illuminated.

Next, Three recent government reports are reviewed as a group. They are:

  • First year on campus: Diversity in the initial experiences of Australian undergraduates
  • Developing lifelong learners through undergraduate education
  • Recognising and rewarding good teaching in Australian higher education
All three reports have contributed both insights and challenges to tertiary teaching and learning in the recent past. Links are provided from the review to the full texts of 'First year on campus' and 'Recognising and rewarding good teaching'.

RMIT and ultiBASE are proud to be sponsoring a free, public lecture by Dr Charles Glassick on March 12 in Melbourne. Dr Glassick is Interim Director of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and was a close collaborator with Ernest Boyer in the work 'Scholarship Reconsidered'. He will address the question: 'What hope for scholarship?'

Our Events section includes information about other opportunities to share in Dr Glassick's Australian visit as well as many other local and international conferences related to teaching and learning. Tell us about your planned Events - we will be happy to tell the world on your behalf.

The increase in submissions to ultiBASE has been the impetus behind the improvements to our Publishing section. We have articulated our expectations for the formats in which we publish as well as clarifying our requirements in relation to the important question of Copyright. You will also find our Publishing Agreement as well as full details on how to submit to ultiBASE.

Well over two hundred individual 'subscribers' now receive ultiBASE In-Site as an email each month. Thanks to all those who have emailed their appreciation and comments back to ultiBASE.
